To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first planned scenic highway, the Troutdale Historical Society commissioned this monument to be placed in Troutdale’s newest park, Visionary Park.
The monument depicts the two men, Samuel Lancaster and Samuel Hill, as they contemplate the task of building a scenic highway through the difficult terrain of the Columbia River Gorge. These two men devoted their expertise, time, and talents to the building of this magnificent highway. Their goal was to not mar, but enhance the beauty of the Gorge; to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy its beauty.
“I have been inspired by these men and their vision of beauty. My hope is this monument and Visionary Park will represent the excellence they pursued 100 years ago and will inspire future generations to strive for greatness by finding a passion worth devotion.” –Rip Caswell, Sculptor
